Nanning, backing onto the vast hinterland of Southwest China and facing the Beibu Gulf, is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and serves as the region's political, economic, cultural, educational, scientific, technological, and financial center. It also acts as a gateway and forefront for China's opening‑up and cooperation with ASEAN. Nanning has long been known as "China's Green City" and "the Place Yearned for by Folk Songs of the World," and has earned titles such as National Civilized City, National Health City, and China's Excellent Tourist City.
Historical Evolution
Nanning belonged to the Baiyue region in ancient times. In the first year of the Daxing era of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (318 AD), Jinxing Commandery was established, with Jinxing (present‑day Nanning) as its administrative seat—marking the beginning of Nanning's establishment as an administrative entity, a history spanning over 1,700 years. In the sixth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (632 AD), it was renamed Yong Prefecture, and the Yong Prefecture Governor's Office was established, giving rise to Nanning's abbreviation "Yong". In the first year of the Taiding era of the Yuan Dynasty (1324 AD), Yong Prefecture was renamed Nanning Road, meaning "peace in the southern frontier", from which the name "Nanning" originated. On December 4, 1949, Nanning was liberated. On February 8, 1950, Nanning was designated as the capital of Guangxi Province; in March 1958, when Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was established, Nanning became its capital.
